Tenor Louis Hurley, lauded for his “honeyed tenor” and “light finesse” (Limelight Magazine, Sydney Morning Herald), partners with internationally-acclaimed baroque harpist Hannah Lane, hailed as “a true master of this instrument” (Australian Stage), for a program that delves into the rich fabric of English musical heritage. Tracing an expressive lineage from the haunting songs of John Dowland and the poignant poetry settings of Henry Purcell through to the introspective beauty of Rebecca Clarke and the folk-inspired genius of Benjamin Britten, Hurley and Lane explore how English composers have long drawn from the well of vernacular tradition. Interwoven with much-loved English folk songs – some of which may have echoed through taverns and courts in Purcell and Dowland’s own time – this performance portrays the diverse cultural and emotional landscapes that have shaped England’s resplendent tapestry of harmony and melody.
