Dreaming of tens of thousands of years of human history, we find ourselves on the sacred Western Victorian sandstone of Gariwerd with the phenomenal artistry of Amos Roach’s Petyan, a narrative of a thousand generations of springtimes; whilst in medieval Italy, amongst the Roman ruins, a wandering trovatore strums an anonymous tune of indeterminable age and origin on his theorbo, then pens a newly imagined Fantasia or Ricercar, unwittingly laying the foundations for centuries of harmonic and melodic invention; Mozart picks up the thread, creating one of his most treasured gifts to humanity; a young Alma Mahler is inspired to masterfully set poetry by Dehmel, Hartleben, Falke, Rilke and Heine and waits 10 years before her husband allows her to publish; finally, Seletsky reunites us with the musical embodiment of centuries of displacement and migration – and we keep dreaming, of tens of thousands of years of human history.
