Melbourne ensemble PLEXUS returns to Port Fairy for the latest exclusive instalment in its commitment to new Australian work, synthesising creative links across multidisciplinary artistic networks. Joined by leading Europe-based Australian tenor Steve Davislim, who is acclaimed worldwide and is in demand internationally on both concert and operatic stages, PLEXUS revisits one of the very first of over 110 new works they’ve commissioned and premiered since forming as an ensemble nearly a decade ago. Premiered in 2014, Richard Mills’ diptych, Ganymed and Leda, expresses two kinds of exposure to the Divine, firstly personified by Zeus as Father, engendering a pantheistic mystical union; and secondly, Zeus as both creator and destroyer, in the form of a swan violating Leda and begetting the troubled house of Atreus. PLEXUS and Davislim then breathe life into a world premiere arrangement of an astounding collection of Schubert lieder, an Odyssey across the emotional universe of classical myth – the Greek and Roman gods, Philoctetes, Atys, Cupid, Memnon, Tartarus, Ganymede, Helios, and Prometheus.
